You will need to work the rubber retainer ring around the edge of the grommet & washer. To be certain they will be held in place properly. Find the spot you want to place the grommet in. Apply pressure by squeezing the handle. You should feel or hear a slight pop when the grommet cuts through your material. After the grommet has cut through, you want to adjust the pressure knob back slightly to be sure the outside edges of the grommet & washer do not cut through your material. One more final squeeze will set the grommet. You will need to experiment with the adjustment knob to find tune the tool for your particular application.
